Green Sea Turtle Weighing Over 70kg Lays Eggs on Hon Cau Island – A Marvel of Nature Conservation

Early morning of August 26th, a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) weighing over 70kg came ashore on Trang Dao Beach, Hon Cau Island, Binh Thuan province, Vietnam to lay 75 eggs. The mother turtle, measuring 97 cm in length and 88 cm in width, was first spotted at 7 PM on August 25th by Ms. Luu Yen Phi and a team of volunteers from the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area. After multiple attempts, the turtle finally laid its eggs at dawn, carefully covering the nest with sand before returning to the sea.

This is the second time this year that a green sea turtle has chosen Trang Dao Beach as a nesting site. Earlier in August, another sea turtle laid nearly 80 eggs on the same beach. The eggs have been relocated to a protected incubation area, where they will be monitored until they hatch.

The Hon Cau Marine Protected Area spans 12,500 hectares, including both the island and surrounding waters, and is a crucial habitat for green sea turtles and other marine life. Nature conservation efforts here have been successful in protecting and nurturing the turtle population, allowing many hatchlings to safely reach the ocean each year.

In Vietnam, Hon Cau is not the only significant nesting site. The Con Dao archipelago, particularly known for its Green Sea Turtles conservation, accounts for 90% of the country’s sea turtle nesting. Hundreds of thousands of turtle hatchlings are released into the sea from Con Dao turtle conservation annually. The Green Sea Turtle and other sea turtle species are listed in international agreements like CITES and CMS, highlighting their endangered status and the importance of turtle conservation.

Con Dao Dive Center has long been committed to contributing to these nature conservation efforts by offering high-quality diving tours that prioritize safety and respect for the ecosystem. These tours allow visitors to experience the beauty of Con Dao’s marine ecosystem while learning about the importance of protecting endangered species like green sea turtles.

Conserving sea turtles requires collective effort, and the practical actions at Hon Cau and Con Dao significantly contribute to ensuring the survival of these ancient creatures. Join Con Dao Dive Center to witness the hatchlings returning to the ocean, along with exploring the wonders of the tropical marine life through our diving activities.
