Sea Turtle Eggs Discovered on Hon Cau Island – A Remarkable Conservation Milestone in Vietnam

In the early morning of August 26, a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) weighing over 70kg came ashore on Trang Dao Beach, Hon Cau Island, Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam, to lay 75 sea turtle eggs. The mother turtle, measuring 97 cm in length and 88 cm in width, was first observed at 7:00 PM on August 25 by Ms. Luu Yen Phi and volunteers from the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area.

After several nesting attempts throughout the night, the turtle successfully laid her eggs at dawn, carefully covering the nest with sand before returning to the sea. This marked the second sea turtle egg-laying event on Trang Dao Beach this year, following another nest of nearly 80 eggs recorded earlier in August. To ensure survival, the sea turtle eggs were relocated to a protected incubation area, where conservation teams will closely monitor them until hatching.

The Hon Cau Marine Protected Area spans over 12,500 hectares of island and surrounding waters, serving as a critical habitat for green sea turtles and other marine species. Ongoing sea turtle conservation in Vietnam, together with broader marine protection initiatives, has played a vital role in safeguarding nesting beaches, protecting sea turtle eggs, and supporting healthy turtle populations.

While Hon Cau is an important nesting site, the Con Dao archipelago remains Vietnam’s most significant sea turtle conservation area, accounting for nearly 90% of the country’s sea turtle nesting activity. Each year, hundreds of thousands of hatchlings are released into the ocean through long-term sea turtle conservation Vietnam programs led by national parks, conservation teams, and local partners. Green sea turtles and other sea turtle species are protected under international agreements such as CITES and CMS, highlighting their endangered status and the global importance of preserving nesting habitats.

At Con Dao Dive Center, marine protection is an integral part of our professional diving activities. Through responsible diving tours that prioritize safety and respect for the ecosystem, we help raise awareness of sea turtle conservation in Vietnam while allowing visitors to experience the rich marine biodiversity of Con Dao in a sustainable way.

Protecting sea turtle eggs requires collective action. Conservation efforts at Hon Cau and Con Dao play a vital role in ensuring these ancient marine creatures continue to thrive, reinforcing Vietnam’s commitment to long-term marine conservation and biodiversity protection.
